Step 1: Demonstrate the WHO's hand washing technique (2 minutes)
The World Health Organization has endorsed a procedure for effective hand-washing. You can download a poster of the technique, or show the video below.
Step 2: Get the students to wash their hands "the way they usually do" (3 minutes)
Apply a squirt of Glow 2 Show Lotion to the students’ hands. Get them to rub it into all parts of their hands – front and back. It often helps to tell them to pretend it is moisturiser.
Then have the students wash their hands with warm water and soap.
Step 3: Check their success with a UV light (3 minutes)
Use a Glow 2 Show UV Torch or GlowBox to reveal any remaining Lotion. In particular, look at the backs of hands, between the fingers, and in the fingernail beds.
This will let you begin the discussion about correct hand washing technique.
Step 4: Individual coaching (2 minutes)
Give praise to students who have done well, and individual coaching to others who have not done well.
Step 5: Second attempt and check (3‑5 minutes)
Because students see their own patterns, improvement is quick and memorable. The method is low-mess, uses very small amounts of product, and works with common UV boxes/torches already in many schools. Teachers can repeat the check in a week to keep the habit strong.
