Hand dryers are blowing more than just hot air
Hand dryers might look sleek and sound hygienic, but a recent article from The Week has stirred up a storm of hot air – literally. Turns out, those high-speed blasts could be spreading bathroom bacteria straight onto your freshly washed hands, face and clothes.
Here at Glow 2 Show, we’re all about making the invisible visible. Our UV-based hygiene demos have long shown how easily contamination spreads, and this new evidence only adds fuel to the fire. According to the article, hand dryers suck in ambient air – often full of aerosolised particles from toilet flushes – and blow it back out, coating your skin in a microbial mist. One study even found up to 60 bacterial colonies on petri dishes exposed to dryer air, compared to just one colony from regular bathroom air.
Paper towels: the unsung hero
While hand dryers might win points for sustainability, paper towels are still the hygiene MVP. They dry hands faster, remove more bacteria, and don’t blast germs around the room. Health experts from the CDC and Cleveland Clinic agree – wet hands transfer more germs, and paper towels are the safer bet, especially in hospitals, kitchens and schools.
What it means for hygiene education
At Glow 2 Show, we use UV light to show what the naked eye can’t. Whether it’s invisible residue on hands or airborne particles swirling around a dryer, our tools help people see the risks – and change behaviour. This new research backs what we’ve been teaching all along: drying matters, and not all methods are created equal.
So next time you’re in a public loo, skip the blast and grab a towel. Your microbiome – and your clothes – will thank you.
