A new UK–Danish study has revealed something pretty alarming: nearly half of hospital toilet users didn’t wash their hands – even in settings where hygiene is absolutely critical. Over 19 weeks at Bispebjerg Hospital in Denmark, researchers from the University of Surrey tracked 2,636 toilet visits using pipe sensors. The result? A staggering 43.7% of users skipped handwashing, with some weeks peaking at 61.8% non-compliance.
When hygiene slips
The study – titled FLUSH. WASH. PROTECT. – found that handwashing lapses were most common at the start and end of the day, and around mealtimes. That suggests fatigue, distraction and routine might be undermining even the most basic hygiene habits. Despite the global spotlight on hand hygiene during COVID, researchers say it’s still not a consistent behaviour. Professor Carrie Newlands summed it up: posters and hand gel stations aren’t cutting it anymore – we need smarter strategies that actually change behaviour.
What Glow 2 Show is doing about it
At Glow 2 Show, we reckon hygiene education needs to be hands-on, not just stuck on a wall. Our UV-based tools show contamination in real time – helping people see what they’re missing and learn how to wash properly. Whether you’re training healthcare workers, students or food handlers, our kits turn hygiene into something visual, memorable and effective.
Because when it comes to handwashing, seeing really is believing.
